What is whist
The classic partnership card game
Whist is a four-player trick-taking game played in two fixed partnerships with one 52-card deck. Each player gets 13 cards, the dealer's last card names the trump suit, and you must follow suit whenever you can. Take more than six of the 13 tricks and every extra trick is a point — the first side to 7 points wins. It is simple to learn, rewards memory and teamwork, and it is the game that contract bridge grew out of.

How to play
How to play whist
Whist is a game of memory and teamwork. Follow suit, count the trumps, and win more than six tricks with your partner each hand.
- 1
Meet your partner
Four players sit at the table in two fixed partnerships. You (South) play with your partner across the table (North) against West and East. Every player is dealt 13 cards from a standard 52-card deck, and Aces are high.
- 2
Trump is the last card
The deal goes around the table one card at a time and the dealer gets the very last card. That card is turned face up and its suit is trump for the whole hand. Dealing rotates clockwise each hand, so trump changes every time.
- 3
Follow suit, win the trick
The player left of the dealer leads any card. Everyone else must follow the led suit if they can; with none of it they may play anything, including a trump. The highest trump wins the trick, or if no trump was played, the highest card of the led suit. The winner leads next.
- 4
Score above the book
A hand is 13 tricks. Your partnership's first six tricks — the book — score nothing; every trick after that is worth one point. Reach 7 points before the other side does and you win the game.
Tips to win more games
- Lead your longest side suit: long suits eventually become winners once the opponents run out.
- Cash Aces and Kings early, before an opponent can trump them.
- Count trumps. There are 13 in every hand — if you have seen 10 played, you know how many are still out.
- Follow low when your partner is already winning the trick. Save your high cards for tricks that need them.
- Play third hand high: if you are third to play and the trick is still open, go up to beat the opponent.
- Trump a suit you are void in only when it wins the trick and the opponents cannot over-trump it behind you.
- Use hints to learn. The hint button shows the card the computer would play from your seat — study why.
- Watch what the opponents discard. Their throw-aways show which suits they are short in.
FAQ
Whist, answered
Straight answers about the free whist card game you can play online in your browser.
What is whist?
Whist is a classic trick-taking card game for four players in two fixed partnerships, played with a standard 52-card deck. Each player gets 13 cards, one suit is trump, and partners try to win more than six of the 13 tricks each hand. It is the ancestor of contract bridge and a close relative of spades and hearts-style trick games.
How do you play whist?
Four players sit as two partnerships — you and North against West and East. Deal 13 cards to everyone; the dealer's last card is turned up and its suit is trump. The player left of the dealer leads a card, and the others must follow suit if they can. The highest trump wins the trick, or the highest card of the led suit if no trump was played, and the winner leads next. After 13 tricks, a side scores one point for every trick over six. First to 7 points wins.
Is whist free to play online here?
Yes. whistgame.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no premium tiers or paywalls. Press Play and a hand is dealt.
Do I need to download an app or create an account?
No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.
How is the trump suit chosen in whist?
By the dealer's last card. Cards are dealt one at a time around the table and the dealer receives the final card of the deck. That card is turned face up and its suit is trump for the hand. Because the dealer changes every hand, trump changes too.
Do I have to follow suit?
Yes. If you hold any card of the suit that was led, you must play one. Only a player with none of that suit may play any card, trump included. The game enforces this for you — cards you cannot legally play are dimmed.
